Pressure Ulcer

Pressure ulcers are typically red and swollen and may have pus coming out of the wound.

What is Pressure Ulcer?

Pressure ulcers (bed sores) can happen to anyone, but they usually affect people who are confined to bed or sit in a chair or wheelchair for long periods of time.

They are typically red and swollen and may have pus coming out of the wound. For those in wheelchairs, sores often occur on the skin over the tailbone or buttocks, shoulder blades and spine, as well as the backs of arms and legs.

Bedridden patients may get them on the heels, ankles, and behind the knees as well.

Risks

Risks are higher for those with medical conditions that affect blood supply, such as diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, kidney failure, or neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease. Fragile skin and limited mobility can also increase the risk.

Causes

Pressure ulcers are caused by prolonged pressure that reduces blood flow to the skin and underlying tissues. Friction and shear — when skin slides against a surface — can worsen the damage, leading to open sores and delayed healing, especially over bony areas.

Wound Care

Treatment focuses on relieving pressure, keeping the wound clean, and improving blood flow. Our wound specialists use advanced dressings, offloading methods, and nutritional support to accelerate recovery and prevent recurrence.

Treatment Options

Advanced Dressings

We use modern wound dressing materials designed to speed up healing, reduce infection risk, and keep the area clean and protected.

Debridement

Our trained clinicians safely remove dead or infected tissue to promote faster healing and create a healthier wound bed.

Offloading

Offloading helps reduce pressure on wounds—especially for diabetic patients—to prevent further injury and aid recovery.

Home Care

For patients who prefer comfort at home, we offer home visits and follow-up treatments supervised by our medical team.
