Venous Leg Ulcer
The symptoms of a Venous Leg Ulcer include pain, itching and swelling in the affected leg. The skin around the ulcer may appear hardened or discoloured, and the sore can sometimes produce a foul-smelling discharge.
What is Venous Leg Ulcer?
A leg ulcer is a long-lasting wound that typically takes more than 4 to 6 weeks to heal. This type of ulcer usually develops below the knee and above or around the ankles due to poor blood circulation.
Venous leg ulcers often appear irregular in shape, with the surrounding skin discoloured or swollen. The affected area may look reddish and, in some cases, be covered with yellow fibrous tissue. When infected, the ulcer can produce yellow or green discharge, accompanied by pain and inflammation.

Risks
Risks are higher for individuals with varicose veins, a history of blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis), or blockage of lymph vessels that cause fluid buildup. Smoking, obesity, and poor lifestyle habits also increase the risk.
Causes
Venous ulcers occur due to poor blood circulation in the legs, often from venous insufficiency. Damaged valves in veins cause blood to pool, increasing pressure and slowing the healing process.
Wound Care
Treatment focuses on debridement, dressing, and compression therapy. Doctors may recommend compression bandages or stockings to relieve pressure and enhance healing.
